According to The Wall Street Journal’s Lingling Wei, Chinese diplomats and state media had downplayed President Trump’s tariff threat to calm the markets. Citing Chinese sources with direct knowledge of the matter, Wei reported that some officials who were supposed to leave for Washington today are now staying put and waiting for further instructions.

“Be fore mak ing a fi nal de ci sion on whether Vice Pre mier Liu should travel to Wash ing ton, the Chi nese side is try ing to get clar ity from the U.S. about Trump’s in ten tions re gard ing the tweets, said the peo ple with knowl edge of the plans,” Wei noted, via Twitter.
