European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen was out with additional comments in the last hour and said that Brexit positions remain apart on fundamental issues.
Key quotes:
- Both sides have not bridged differences on fisheries.
- Fairness key on the level playing field.
- This is not to say we would require the UK to follow us every time we raise standards.
- The UK would remain free to decide, the EU would adjust market access conditions as needed.
- Anyone who has doubts about the rule of law mechanism can turn to the EU court.
- We will decide on Sunday whether we have conditions for a Brexit deal or not.
The comments did little to ease market worries about the possibility of a no-deal Brexit or provide any respite to the GBP bulls. In fact, the GBP/USD pair – though has managed to rebound around 40 pips from multi-week lows – maintained its offered tone near the 1.3325 region.
