The German Chancellor Angela Merkel was quoted by Der Spiegel on Monday, as saying that “Will not stand for re-election as head of CDU party.”
This comes after her coalition government suffered a severe setback in key regional elections for the second time this month. Merkel’s Christian Democrat Union party (CDU) plunged to its worst result since 1966 in the state of Hesse, according to initial exit polls.
Meanwhile, Andrea Nahles, leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD), noted that governing a coalition needs a “clear roadmap”.
