New Zealand’s fiscal response to coronavirus has been strongest among advanced nations

According to data tweeted by Philipp Heimberger, Economist at Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies, New Zealand’s fiscal response to the coronavirus crisis has been the strongest among advanced nations. In contrast, the response from Eurozone countries such as Italy and Spain have been relatively weak.

Additional government spending or foregone tax revenue as the percentage of gross domestic spending was the highest in New Zealand, as per International Monetary Fund’s October 2020 Fiscal Monitor.

Even so, the NZD/USD pair rose by 8.7% in the final quarter of 2020 and was last seen trading near 0.7224.

Fitch Ratings affirmed New Zealand’s Long-Term Foreign-Currency (FC) Issuer Default Rating (IDR) at ‘AA’ early Tuesday, while taking note of the country’s high governance standards and a demonstrated commitment to prudent fiscal management, balanced against high levels of household and net external debt.
