- As ever, the headlines and sentient around Chine and US trade talks are conflicting and we will likely have to wait until the eleventh hour to find out what the outcome of this week’s talks will be.
We have heard that the White House has been ramping up pressure to reach a trade deal with China in the next two weeks, but warning that the U.S. is prepared to walk away from the negotiations. Bloomberg quoted Mick Mulvaney, President Donald Trump’s acting chief of staff, saying overnight at an event in Los Angeles, “It won’t go on forever…At some point in any negotiation you go, ‘we’re close to getting something done so we’re going to keep going.’ On the other hand, at some point you throw up your hands and say ‘this is never going anywhere.'”
In more recent trade, Reuters reported that U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on Wednesday that he had a “nice” working dinner the night before in Beijing with Chinese Vice Premier Liu He. “We did. We had a nice working dinner, thank you,” Mnuchin told reporters at his Beijing hotel when asked if he had met with Liu the night before – He did not elaborate.
