Two Koreas to reconnect roads and rail as US expresses concern – Reuters

As reported by Reuters, the US is expressing discontent with the moves being made by North and South Korea, with the two countries moving forward on re-coupling their two nations while US political drives spin in circles.

Key highlights

Monday saw the two Koreas agree to begin reconnecting railways and roads between the two nations in a step towards further improving their relationship, despite concerns from the US that a rapid North-South reunification process could undermine their efforts to economically and diplomatically force North Korea to give up its nuclear weapons.

Military figures from both sides will be meeting “in the near future” to develop further steps for a military pact that was struck last month, and plans to develop a joint military commission and the gradual cleaning up of the DMZ of landmines and guardposts were also on the accord.

Washington still plans to move forward with yet another summit between North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump, but the US State Department is stressing that economic sanctions and penalties must remain in place until North Korea denuclearizes.

On Monday a spokeswoman for the U.S. State Department said Moon had stated in the past that “improvement of relations between North and South Korea cannot advance separately from resolving North Korea’s nuclear program. We expect all member states to fully implement U.N. sanctions, including sectoral goods banned under U.N. Security Council resolutions, and expect all nations to take their responsibilities seriously to help end (North Korea’s) illegal nuclear and missile programs,” she added. – Reuters
