UK PM Johnson to Irish PM Varadkar: Any deal must abolish the backstop

Summarising the phone call between British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar, PM Johnson’s office in a statement said that Johnson reiterated that any Brexit deal must abolish the backstop. “The government will approach any negotiations which take place with determination and energy and in a spirit of friendship,” Johnson added.

According to the statement, Johnson repeated that the UK will leave the EU on October 31 “no matter what” and that they will never put physical checks or infrastructure on the Irish border.

The GBP/USD pair seems to be ignoring those headlines, trading near 1.2170 and erasing 0.4% on the day.
