Bitcoin Cash donations support Hong Kong protesters

  • Protesters demand the withdrawal of an extradition bill to China and the immediate resignation of Chief Executive Carrie Lam.
  • Pictures show that free water bottles were distributed to the protestors bearing BCH logo.

Hong Kong is going through a period of extreme civil turmoil. The protestors are against the government’s decision to allow for extraditions to mainland China. They have even smashed up the glass windows in an attempt to storm the Hong Kong Legislative Council. Along with the withdrawal of the extradition law, the protestors are demanding the resignation of Chief Executive Carrie Lam.

CNN reported:

“A red alert has been issued in the Hong Kong Legislative Council (LegCo) as protesters try to storm the building. All people should now immediately leave the building, a government statement said. It is unclear who, besides the riot police, would still be inside at this point. Protesters, there have been smashing windows with metal objects since this afternoon and some have now entered a small part of the building.”

Interestingly, a few pictures have surfaced of the protestors carrying water bottles with the Bitcoin Cash (BCH) symbol on them. Each bottle, which was being handed out for free, has the BCH logo on the front, while on the back it said that the water bottles were paid for by international donations of Bitcoin Cash. It looks like BCH holders around the world have been supporting the Hong Kong protests in their own way.

The Chinese government, which is generally very hostile towards digital financing, has banned crypto exchanges and has made ICOs illegal in any form. On the other hand, Hong Kong is very welcoming and hosts multiple crypto related businesses.

BCH/USD faced a sharp drop from $416 to $380 this Tuesday before the bulls rallied the price back up to $414.80 so far today.
