German ZEW Economic Sentiment Index beats estimates with 71.2 in February

  • German ZEW Economic Sentiment arrived at 71.2 in Feb vs. 59.5 expected.
  • ZEW Current Situation arrived at -67.2 in Feb vs. -67.0 expected
  • EUR/USD flirts with three-week highs near 1.2160 on mixed ZEW numbers.

The German ZEW headline numbers for February showed that the Economic Sentiment Index improved further to 71.2 versus 59.5 expectations and 61.8 last.

While the sub-index Current Conditions figure arrived at -67.2 in Feb versus -67.0 expected and -66.4 booked previously.

Meanwhile, the Eurozone ZEW Economic Sentiment for Feb jumped to 69.6 vs. 57.0 expected and 58.3 last.

ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach noted: “Financial market experts are optimistic about the future; they are confident that the German economy will be back on the growth track within the next six months.”

“Consumption and retail trade, in particular, are expected to recover significantly, accompanied by higher inflation expectations,” Wambach added.
