Key Quotes

“In substance, its anxieties differ little from Washington’s and include obligations on EU exporters for technology transfer, joint venture requirements, market entry restrictions and extensive overcapacity in traditional industries (ie steel) and also high tech.”

“The EU is uncomfortable with China’s cybersecurity laws, which came into force on 1 June 2017, seeing them as “excessive” and with broader reach into industrial and economic considerations. The EU is also worried about recent Chinese regulations governing new energy vehicles (NEVs) and that “foreign original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) might be required to disclose their entire key technologies to their Chinese joint venture partners, potentially constituting a forced transfer of technology.”
