The results from yesterday’s Swedish election show that the left bloc won 144 seats while the right bloc won 143 in the Riksdag (175 needed for a majority), notes the research team at TD Securities.

Key Quotes

“The far-right Sweden Democrats won 62 seats. The tally won’t be finalised until Wednesday, however, as counting of overseas votes continues.”

“The process of forming a government now kicks off, with the incumbent PM Lofven hoping to form a government on the left. With under half the seats in the Riksdag, however, he’ll be reaching out to some of the centre-right parties for support, and will hope to build a majority coalition government rather than rely on support from right parties on a case-by-case basis. The process to form a government could take weeks, if not months, to complete.”
