Analysts at ANZ Bank Australia explained that while the final result may not be known for some days and is likely to be close, the Liberals look set to lose the seat of Wentworth.
“The Australian Electoral Commission currently has the two-candidate preferred vote at 51.1% for Kerryn Phelps (Independent) and 48.9% for Dave Sharma (Liberal). The loss would leave the Coalition in minority government. Despite this, the Coalition is likely to continue to govern until the next election, which is due to be held by May 2019. Phelps has suggested she would back the government on issues of supply and confidence, while two other crossbenchers, Rebekha Sharkie and Cathy McGowan, have stated they would do the same.”
