While speaking at a news conference on Friday, Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said that the latest surge in the coronavirus cases in the capital is not a second virus wave, citing some experts.
He added that the state government may call for caution if there is a concern about a major outbreak.
Koike confirmed 54 new infections in the city today. The daily count in Tokyo topped 40 for the third straight day. Meanwhile, 82 cases of coronavirus infection were newly confirmed in Japan on Thursday.
Market reaction
USD/JPY is testing bids just above 107.00, as broad US dollar weakness amid a risk-on rally in the global stocks drags the major lower. The virus stats failed to have any impact on the spot.
