The seemingly humiliating idea that Greek would sell off some islands in order to put some cash in its coffers is apparently not ruled out.

Greek PM Antonis Samaras was asked by the French paper Le Monde if he would be willing to sell uninhabited islands. His answer was interesting:

Samaras just gave one condition:

…as long as this doesn’t pose problems for national security, some of these isles could have a commercial use…

According to Wikipedia, Greece has between 1200 and 6000 islands, depending on the minimum size of land in the sea that counts as an island.

Out of these, between 166 and 227 are inhabited. So, there are at least 973 uninhabited islands.

It’s still hard to believe that Greece will put any of its islands on sale, but if the leader of the country doesn’t rule it out, it shows how grave the situation is, but also how far he is willing to go to keep Greece afloat and in the euro-zone.
