The South Korean Bithumb suspended withdrawal and deposit services on Saturday, March 30. The platform’s monitoring system spotted abnormal cryptocurrency withdrawal activities.
“We deeply apologize to our members for delaying the cryptocurrency deposit and withdrawal service, we would like to inform you of the circumstances of the grounds and confirm that your assets are safe,”- the company wrote in its blog.
Dovey Wan, the partner of Primitive Ventures noticed strange transfers from Bithumb wallets. She noted that over 3M EOS coins (worth of about $12.6M) left the wallet that belonged to the exchange.
“Bithumb is being hacked, at its EOS cold storage level!!! Over 3million EOS has been transferred out. Detail to be reported, confirmed by a security firm who’s auditing for Bithumb.” she wrote.
Later she added that the theft took place after hackers laid their hands on Bithumb’s private key on EOS blockchain. Also, they gave a list of exchanges where the stolen coins had been transferred. It included Huobi, KuCoin, EXMO among others.
Meanwhile, the cryptocurrency market seems to have turned a deaf ear to the news as all major coins a rangebound with bulish bias during early Asian hours on Monday.
